Canton - Chancy "Chany" Kumlien, age 75, passed away Tuesday, May 17, 2011 at Canton Good Samaritan Society. His funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, May 21, at Canton United Methodist Church, with burial at Forest Hill Cemetery near Canton. Visitation will be Friday from 2:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Anderson Funeral Home in Canton, with family present from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., Chany was born August 7, 1935 at Newton Hills near Canton, SD, the son of Charlie and Clara (Stangeland) Kumlien. He attended schools in South Dakota and Iowa. At age 15, he worked on farms as a hired man. He worked for Joe Ytterness, who helped Chany get started farming on his own., Chany was united in marriage to Wanda Short February 16, 1957 in Canton. They lived on farms south of Canton and near Beloit, before moving to their farm north of Canton, where they farmed and milked cows for 40 years. They moved to Canton in 2001. His wife, Wanda, died in 2005. Chany loved visiting with family and friends. He enjoyed driving his mules and giving rides at the apple orchard., Those grateful for having shared his life are: his son, Al (Marsha) Kumlien, Canton; five grandchildren- Amanda Kumlien (Dominic Gemelli), Craig Kumlien, Christina Sharon (Brad Thompson), Joseph Kumlien, and Katee Kumlien; six great-grandchildren- Austin Kumlien, Alexus Dethleusay, Adam McManus, ToriLea Sharon, Hailey Thompson, and Angela Scott; sisters- Shirley (Jim) Kredit, Tempe, AZ, Winnie Kumlien, Sioux Falls, SD; brother, Rodger (Joan) Minor, Beloit, IA; and many nieces and nephews. BLACK HAWK - James Edwards "Jim" Sattler, 47, Black Hawk, passed away Friday, May 13, 2011 at his home. He was born Oct. 16, 1963 in Rapid City, where he was raised, often relocating to San Jose, Calif. He attended Rapid City Stevens High School. Jim will always be remembered for his charismatic and charming personality. Despite lots of hardship, he loved people and enjoyed helping others. For the past decade he enjoyed the company of his dear friend, Trinity and giving much care and love to their two dogs, Rex and Killer. Jim will be greatly missed by all. Survivors include but are not limited to his very dear friend, Trinity Peoples and her daughter and son-in-law, Treasure and Logan Pung; a brother, Mike (Kim) Sattler in Sioux Falls; a niece, Raini, and nephew, Skylar; a sister, Lisa (Will) Burley-Howell in Rapid City; and uncle, Fred Guerrero in Los Angeles; and many, many friends. RAPID CITY - Ruth Eileene Brinkman, 88, Rapid City, died Wednesday, May 18, 2011, at Rapid City Regional Hospital. She was born Dec. 15, 1922, in Warren, Ohio, to Lawrence and Gladys (Garren) Woodburn. She grew up in Warren and Newton Falls, Ohio, graduating from high school there. Ruth worked for various theater chains as secretary, bookkeeper, buyer and booker of films and supervisor of theaters for many years. On May 5, 1945, she married Ray Brinkman in Las Vegas. They lived in many states before moving to Rapid City in 1954. She was a member of South Park United Church of Christ where she served on many boards and committees and as church secretary, treasurer and clerk for a number of years. Ruth is survived by her husband, Ray, Rapid City; two sons, David and Bruce, both of Denver; two sisters, Jean Padgett, Fort Myers, Fla., and Vera Gleason, Avon, N.Y.; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her mother and father; and her sister, Sara Murphy. Cremation has taken place and burial will be at 12:30 p.m. Friday, May 20, at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis. Memorial services will follow at 2 p.m. at Westhills Village Healthcare with the Rev. Bruce Herrboldt officiating. Velma Agnes Ehli

RAPID CITY - Velma Agnes Ehli, 83, Rapid City died Tuesday, May 17, 2011 at Rapid City Regional Hospital. Agnes was born March 1, 1928, in Ogallala, Neb., to Ralph and Velma (Southard) Smith. She grew up in Ogallala then moved to Lead. Agnes graduated from Rapid City High School in 1944. After high school, she attended Western Union Telegraphy School in Minneapolis for two years and became a telegraph operator. Agnes married Wendline J. Ehli on Oct. 21, 1946, at the Episcopal Church in Lead. They returned to Rapid City where she worked for Western Union. They started a family, and when the children were older, Agnes was employed at Nash Finch where she worked in advertising and clerical work. She retired after 20 years in 1975. For many years, Agnes was active with Emmanuel Episcopal Women's Group at Emmanuel Episcopal Church in Rapid City. She enjoyed traveling, and she spent many winters in Texas, camping, and visiting with family. She loved spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and planning large family gatherings for the holidays. Survivors include her husband, Wendline Ehli, and a daughter, Linda (James) Hayward, all of Rapid City; a son, William (Kathleen) Ehli, Danbury, Conn.; three foster children, Chuck (Starla) Bilek, Clinton, Iowa, and Marilyn (Myles) Stomberg and Cindy (Don) Pleau, all of Hugo, Minn.; five grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and a brother, Elmer (Claudia) Smith, Rapid City. She was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Lee in 1968; a brother, Ralph Dale Smith; a sister, Roebetta Roth; and great-granddaughter, Mackenzie Mackie. Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. today at Osheim & Schmidt Funeral Home. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, May 20, at Emmanuel Episcopal Church.
