He received his education in Lester, IA., Arthur was united in marriage to Jennie De Vries on December 2, 1943 near Rock Rapids, IA. He served in the Army for two years. He farmed in the Lester and Rock Rapids, IA area. In 1959, he became a partner in the implement business in Ellsworth, MN. Arthur sold Farm Equipment for forty-four years. In 2002 they moved to Sioux Falls, SD where he was on dialysis for 7 1/2 years. He was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church., Arthur is survived by his wife of 67 years, Jennie; two children, Linda (Jim) Groth and Kevin (Brenda) Gisolf; five grandchildren, Alexia (Jason) Fritz, Alex (Carrie) Groth and Ashley Groth; Richard (Brittney) Gisolf and Austin Gisolf and Fiancee, Alicia Wallace; two great-grandchildren, Xavian and Liam Gisolf; one brother, Bernard (Norma) Gisolf, Rock Rapids, IA; two sister-in-laws, Alice Gorter, Sioux Falls, SD and Helen De Vries, Graettinger, IA; one brother-in-law, William (Mina) De Vries, Rock Rapids, IA and many nieces and nephews., Arthur was preceded in death by his parents, Harry and Hattie Gisolf, one son, Harry and a stillborn baby girl, Jolene, one brother, Henry and a sister, Theresa Korthals., In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Westminster Presbyterian Church or DaVita Dialysis Center in Sioux Falls, SD. www.heritagesfsd.com.

Charles P. O'Dell

RAPID CITY - Charles P. "Digger" O'Dell, 92, Rapid City, died Saturday, April 30, 2011, at Fort Meade Veterans Affairs Medical Center. He was born on July 15, 1918, in Roscoe, N.Y. His family moved to a farm south of Winner in 1928. After graduating from the 8th grade he worked on ranches in Nebraska at Springview and Valentine. In 1936 he returned to stay with his mother at Keypaha and then joined the Civilian Conservation Corps as a LEM, Local Experienced Man, which he was although only 18 years old. After the CCC stint he worked on various ranches, went to Pascoe, Wash., for a while, then back to work on various ranches, hauled cattle and bought his first truck. In 1943 he married the love of his life, Vada Papke. They ranched in Springview, Neb., and then farmed 800 acres near Clearfield. In 1945 he took a trip to Italy courtesy of the U.S. Army. Discharged in 1946, he worked for Joe Weeks until 1949 when he started O'Dell farm equipment selling Ferguson tractors. In 1954, when the company became Massey-Ferguson, he became the district manager for them and was stationed in Sioux Falls. In 1958 they bought a Dairy Queen in Sioux Falls, and then did some more trucking and construction work. After promoting an oil lease in Wyoming he moved to Rapid City where he bought Gaulkes Drive Inn and ran it for the summer. Dick then worked for Sheldon Reese managing the 240 Apartment complex on Signal Heights. In 1960 he started hauling trailers for New Moon trailer Co. In 1962 he contracted to work for Robbins and Stearns Lumber Co. Dick or "Digger" as he was also known, had four trucks and drove one for over three-and-a-half million miles before he sold his ICC license for East West Motor Express and retired in 1984. Dick always credited his success in East West to his good drivers, to his loyal friend and mechanic, Ole Keehner, to his wife Vada, who did all the bookkeeping and errands while he was gone, and to the good Lord who was always with him. Dick was preceded in death by his wife, Vada, in 2007; a brother, Jack; and sisters, Tanna and Patta. He leaves behind many good friends and a host of nieces and nephews. Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 7 pm. Tuesday, May 3, at Behrens-Wilson Funeral Home. Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 4, at First Christian Church, Rapid City. Flandreau-Edith Irene Sorensen, age 90, passed away Sunday, May 1, 2011 at Sanford Medical Center, Sioux Falls. Edie, as most people called her, was born June 10, 1920, in Appleton, Minnesota, the daughter of Lynn and Hazel (Dexter) Wilkins. As an infant, she moved with her parents to Trent and graduated from Flandreau High School in 1939. On May 31, 1940, she was united in marriage to Leo Stephenson in Pipestone, Minnesota. To this union two children were born, Lynn and Judith. Leo was stricken with pneumonia and died in 1944. Edie then married Raymond W. Sorensen on December 31, 1945, in Pipestone. To this union two children were also born, Roderick and Larry. She worked at Urban Jewelry and Gift for many years. Edie is survived by her husband, Ray; four children, Lynn and Linda of Alton, IA, Judith Wilson of Lexington, TN, Rod and Karen of Sac City, IA, and Larry and Gina of Flandreau; nine grandchildren, six great grandchildren and a sister-in-law, Iva Erickson of Flandreau. She was preceded in death by her parents and two sisters, Addie Houser and Foy Powers. George William (Bill) Bartholomew passed away at his Lemmon home in the early evening of Good Friday, April 22. Bill went the distance in a battle that started with heart disease in 2008 and cancer in 2010. He fought the battle quietly and courageously and his final days were spent with family and friends at his side in his Lemmon home.

RAPID CITY - Janet Marie Fearon, 68, Rapid City, died Saturday, April 30, 2011, at the Veterans Affairs Black Hills Health Care Center at Fort Meade. Janet was born Aug. 5, 1942, in Huron to Orvel Maynard and Dorothy Lucille (Roberts) Schmit. She grew up in Huron and graduated from Huron High School. She enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served as a clerk in administration. She was honorably discharged and returned home. Janet lived in many places throughout her life. She worked as a waitress, telephone operator, bank teller and several other occupations. She married Francis Fearon in Broomfield, Colo., on Dec. 21, 1984. Survivors include her daughter, Renee (Scott) Kracht, Summerset; her parents, Orvel and Dorothy Schmit, Huron; one brother, Thomas Maynard (Cheryl) Schmit, Las Vegas; three sisters, Leona (Bernard) Kowalke, Spearfish, Cindy Gabert, Rapid City, and Linda (Donald) Schuetzle, Wittman, Ariz.; and a granddaughter, Madison Lynn Marie Kracht. Janet was preceded in death by her husband, Francis, whom she will be buried with. Committal services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 3, at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis, with military honors by the Sturgis Veterans Honor Guard. She was a lifelong resident of Sioux Falls. She attended Sioux Falls Public schools, graduating from Washington High School in 1957., She married Don Burg in the summer of 1961. Of this union, one child was born, Ann Marie Burg., She worked many years for the Sioux Falls School District, primarily at Patrick Henry Middle School as Lead Secretary, retiring in 1996. For the last fourteen years, she has worked as Office Manager for Jamie Volin at Ameriprise Financial., She loved working in her flower gardens, fishing, travel, dancing and doll and figurine collecting. She participated whole heartedly in the Red Hat Society. She also enjoyed attending auctions and flea markets., Grateful for having shared her life is her daughter, Ann Marie Burg, Sioux Falls; her brother, Robert Selig, Sioux Falls; special friends, Doug Fenstermaker, Mary Standaert and Brenda Crawford, all of Sioux Falls., She was preceded in death by her parents and cousin, Sylvia Hess and her uncle, Herb Hess., Her loving kindness will be missed by all who knew her., Funeral Mass will begin at 10:30 am Wednesday at St. Mary Catholic Church.
