Sioux Falls - Arlue Nix Thomas, 90, died Wednesday, April 27, 2011 at Sanford USD Medical Center, Sioux Falls. Visitation will be from 4-7:00pm Sunday at the Sunnycrest United Methodist Church, 4801 W. 41st St., Sioux Falls with a Prayer Service at 7:00pm Sunday evening. Funeral services will be 10:30am Monday, May 2, 2011 at the United Methodist Church, Hurley, with burial at the Hurley Cemetery., Arlue Nix was born on January 28, 1921 at Murdo, SD to Walter and Vivian (Cook) Nix. She attended Jones County Elementary, Pierre Middle School and graduated from Murdo High School. After receiving her teaching certificate from Wessington Springs Junior College and further education at Black Hills State, she taught country school near Murdo. On November 1, 1943 she was united in marriage to Roger J. Thomas at Murdo. They farmed near Murdo for a few years before Roger was ordained as an elder of the Methodist Church. They served churches for 35 years at Timber Lake, Kennebec-Reliance, Faith-Plainview, Alexandria, Onida-Agar, Hitchcock-Broadland, Davis-Hurley-Viborg, White Lake-Underwood, and Bowdle-Tolstoy. They retired to Hurley in 1988. Her husband was a master gardener and she canned, preserved, and froze volumes. She was a member of the United Methodist Church, United Methodist Woman, Eastern Star, Legion Auxiliary, and Federated Women's Club. She was nominated for SD Mother of the Year in 2001. They moved to Sunnycrest Village in 2002 where she was active in the library among other things. Her husband Roger died in 2005., Grateful for having shared her life are her children, Kent (Connie), Tecumseh, OK, John (Lee), Eden Prairie, MN, Melvin (Nancy), Sioux Falls, Roger (Linda), Apple Valley, MN, David (Nancy), Sioux Falls, Mary (Mark) Tracy, Windsor, CO, and Gary (Carol), Brookings; 13 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren; 2 brothers, Richard (June) Nix, Murdo, SD and Paul (Ellen) Nix, Buffalo, MN; and a family friend, Jerry Walton, California., Memorials may be directed to the Hurley United Methodist Church or SunnycrestVillage. www.hofmeisterjones.com

Cortland Johnson

Baltic - Cortland Johnson, 86, of rural Baltic died Friday, April 29, 2011 at the Sanford Hospice Cottage in Sioux Falls after a two year battle with amyloidosis., Cortland was born at rural Elrod, Clark County, South Dakota, on March 11, 1925, to parents Milo and Hulda (Moren) Johnson. He was baptized at Benton Lutheran Church, Crooks, his family's home church in which his Swedish immigrant great-grandparents were charter members. He attended Southeast Elrod Country School and then in 1937 moved with his parents to a farm northwest of Crooks. He was confirmed at Benton Lutheran Church and graduated from Lyons High School in 1943., Cortland was active in 4-H. He established a purebred Angus herd along with purebred hogs and sheep. He exhibited numerous champions and also earned a trip to the National 4-H Club Congress. He farmed with his father after high school., On June 7, 1946, he married Marilyn Otterby, daughter of Alfred and Selma (Berven) Otterby, at West Nidaros Lutheran Church. They made their home on Cortland's grandfather's farm, 1/2 mile north of the Benton Lutheran Church. In 1948, they moved west of Baltic where he farmed, did custom baling and continued his purebred Angus herd, later known as Marico Angus., Cortland served on numerous local boards, including many at West Nidaros Lutheran Church, (where he was a member for over sixty years), Luther Manor Nursing Home, and the board that organized the Minnehaha County Juvenile Detention Home. He also served on the Lyons Township Board, was president of the Southeastern South Dakota Angus Association, and in 1958 was elected as a State Representative for Minnehaha County., Grateful for having shared his life are his wife of 64 years, Marilyn, Baltic; four children, Linda (Wayne) Larson, Baltic, Gloria (David) Mills, Colton, Kent (Cindy) Johnson and Wyn (Charlene) Johnson of Baltic; fifteen grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; a sister, Shirley Johnson, Westminster, CO; two brothers, Merlyn Johnson, Maurice, IA and Charles Johnson, Gales Ferry, CT. Donald R. Masteller

STURGIS - Don was born Dec. 27, 1927, to Elmer G. and Bessie L. (Prentice) at their home north of Draper. He attended school in Draper, riding horseback to school every day with his three brothers. He enlisted into the U.S. Navy in March of 1946 and served with the Seabees, spending most of his time on the island of Kwajalein in the Marshall Islands. He returned to his home in November 1947 and began his life in farming. On May 17, 1948, he married Ruth DuVall and for those who said it wouldn't last, they made it one month short of being together for 63 years. They lived on a farm northeast of Draper until March 1960 when they moved to Rapid City, where he later bought a moving company, Roush Moving & Storage Co. Sickness forced him to sell the company in February 1979 and they retired to a small farm near Hermosa where they lived for 11 years. From there they moved to Arizona where they made their home for the next 17 years, then finally moving back to South Dakota where they lived in Sturgis near the Fort Meade Health facilities where he received excellent health care. This is where he died April 17, 2011, with his wife and granddaughter, Gena present. He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers and two children. He leaves to mourn his wife; four children, Connie Waddell (Renee), Randall (Butch) Masteller (Bonnie), Karen Dunn (David), and Kurt Masteller (Lisa); nine grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; plus one very special friend of the family, Linda Bluel; numerous nieces and nephews; and a great many friends. Sioux Falls - Edith Evans, 89, of Sioux Falls, died Friday, April 29, 2011 at Good Samaritan Village in Sioux Falls., Edith G. Skretting was born March 15, 1922 at Minneapolis, MN. As a child, she moved with her family to Brookings, SD where she grew up and received her education, graduating from Brookings, High School. Following high school, she attended South Dakota State University until World War II interrupted her education., On September 7, 1943, she was united in marriage with Robert A. Evans. The couple lived in Alexandria, VA during the war where her daughter, Ann was born. After the war, Robert and Edith moved to Sioux Falls, SD where their son, Robert was born. Edith was a homemaker for many years. She was an active member of the First United Methodist Church for her entire adult life. After raising her children, Edith began her career with Norwest Bank. She began her career in the real estate department of the bank, then became the personnel officer, a position she held at the time of her retirement in 1984. Her husband, Robert, preceded her in death in 1983., Edith served on the board of directors of the Y.W.C.A. and was on the Girl Scout Council. She was an avid artist and china painter and a member of the Civic Fine Arts Council. Edith also enjoyed traveling extensively around the world. She was an avid golfer and was a member of the Elmwood Ladies Golf League at the time of her death., Edith was a loving and caring wife, mother and grandmother and will be dearly missed by all of her family., Grateful for having shared her life are her children, Ann Tryon of Canton, SD and Robert M. (Maureen) Evans of Sioux Falls, SD; her grandchildren, Audra (Christopher) Carlson and Emma Tryon, both of Fairbanks, Alaska, Thea (John) Casiano, of Manhattan, Kansas, Ivy Tryon and Tessa Tryon both of Sioux Falls, SD. RAPID CITY - Edward Lou Kertzman, 87, Rapid City, passed away and went to be with Jesus on Thursday, April 28, 2011, in Yankton. Lou was born in Milesville on June 12, 1923, to Henry and Angela (Griffin) Kertzman. He grew up on the family ranch and worked in the family's general store. He enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps and spent time in Guam as a P-47 "Thunderbolt" mechanic. Following his service, Lou came to Rapid City and worked various retail jobs. He met Avis "Jo" Voorhees and they were married in Tilford on June 12, 1948. Lou then worked for over 20 years as a car salesman. He was also very involved with the Morning Optimist Club and served as its president. Following his retirement from car sales, he worked at Meadowbrook Golf Course, which became his home away from home. He loved playing golf and gardening. He was also an accomplished carpenter and built many projects for his family. He is survived by three children, Luanne (Monte) Dirks and Brent (Nora) Kertzman, both of Rapid City, and Lynne (David) Schlottman, Aurora, Colo.; six grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Mary Koenig, Westminster, Colo. He was preceded in death by his wife, Jo; his parents, Henry and Angela; brothers, Hubert, John and Paul; and his sister, Kathryn. Visitation will be for one hour before services at the church. Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10 a.m. Monday, May 2, at Blessed Sacrament Church with the Rev. Janusz Korban presiding. Interment will be at 12:30 p.m. at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis with military honors provided by the Rushmore VFW Post 1273 and the South Dakota National Guard. Frances "Frankie" Marta

Aug. 31, 1917 - April 29, 2011 SPEARFISH - Frances Beatrice Marta - known by her friends and family as Frankie, 93, Spearfish, passed away peacefully Friday, April 29, 2011, with her family by her side. Frankie was born Aug. 31, 1917, at Two Top in Harding County to Ellis and Sena Furois. She had four siblings; Leonard, Edith (Egan), Venita (Marta) and Reta (Velzy). She spent her childhood years in St. Onge and later moved to Deadwood where she graduated from Deadwood High School. On July 29, 1937, she was united in marriage to the love of her life, Angelo J. Marta, in Lead. Together they had three children - Grada (Fritz), Karen (Crotty), and John. Frankie resided in Lead and enjoyed working for many years at the J&E Store on Main Street in the dry goods department. She was also employed by Marilyn's Gifts in Deadwood and later retired from Terry Peak Ski & Sport. Frankie and Angelo cherished 38 years of marriage until his untimely passing in 1975. She wore her little gold band as a testament of her love and remained wholly devoted to her husband until her last breath. In 1990, Frankie moved to Spearfish and resided with her son, John, and his family until the time of her passing. During her full life, she enjoyed many travels and adventures. She was well-known for her cooking, sewing, hard work ethic, determination and love for her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Frankie lived a life that was surrounded with activity, family, and love. She was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Lead. Frankie is survived by one sister, Reta (Jim) Velzy, Yankton; two daughters, Grada (Mel) Fritz, Newport Richey, Fla., and Karen (Charles) Crotty, Deadwood; a son, John (Pam) Marta, Spearfish; 12 grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; two sisters; brother; and a nephew. A rosary and vigil will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 3, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Lead. Funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, May 4, at the church, with Father Kerry Prendiville officiating. A luncheon will follow. Inurnment will be at Little Dane Cemetery in St. Onge. ROCKLEDGE, Fla. - George Silver, 78, Rockledge, died Wednesday, March 30, 2011, at his home. He graduated from Leola High School, in Leola, S.D., Class of '50. He served in the U.S. Air Force in California and England. He received an electrical engineering degree from South Dakota School of Mines and South Dakota State University. He worked on guidance systems for nuclear submarines and the lunar lander in the Apollo program to name a few. He is survived by Jean, his loving wife of 50 years; two children, Robin (Milton) Alvarez of Massachusetts and Chris (Kathy) Silver of Alabama; and four grandchildren, Joey and Katie Alvarez and Erin and Jack Silver. Also mourning his loss are his sister, Leone (Del) Haux; his brother, Charles Silver; his sister, Clara Silver; and six nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents. He enjoyed meeting people and visiting with friends and family. He also enjoyed motorcycles, flying, photography, hams radio, history, and science. He was an avid reader.

FAIRFAX, Va. - Joseph John "Joe" Langenfeld II, the oldest of 14 children, was born Aug. 21, 1943, in Denver, and passed away April 18, 2011, at home. He grew up in Mitchell, S.D., graduating from Notre Dame High School in 1961. Joe received a degree in mechanical engineering from South Dakota School of Mines and Technology in Rapid City in 1966. Serving in the U.S. Army from May 1967 to May 1970, he was a captain and platoon leader/pilot for helicopter missions in Vietnam and served three years as a pilot for the South Dakota National Guard. He also worked as a deck hand on a cargo ship, fifth grade teacher, boat builder, owner and operator of a fiberglass repair business, pilot for off shore drilling in Louisiana, mechanical engineer, and audio book producer and publisher. Other pursuits included writing, sailing, photography, architectural design, and science. He married Holly Maxon from Lemmon, S.D., in 1979. They have three sons, Jeremy of Alexandria, and Samuel and Benjamin of Falls Church. Joe was adventurous and had a unique view in the way he approached life. He had an analytical mind and whomever he engaged in problem solving or in an evening of conversation couldn't help but notice the depth of his intelligence. Joe was kind and cherished his relationships with his family, friends, co-workers and neighbors. He had a special love for children. Joe loved to joke and his favorite movie genre was comedy. Carol died January 24, 1983. Les married Barbara Gageby on February 4, 1984. Les was active in all aspects of Our Savior's Lutheran Church including singing solos. He enjoyed playing cards with special friends, avid Twins and Vikings fan, restored the "red" tractors, owning Volkswagens, meeting people on the "Farm Country Trader" route, and most important, especially spending time with his grandsons., Les is survived by his wife, Barbara; daughter, Pam (Randy) McKenney of Inwood; son, Allen (Janna) Severson of Larchwood, IA; grandsons: Tyler and Ethan McKenney, Cody, Justin, Tanner, and Zachary Severson; brother, Joel (MaryAnn) Severson of San Antonio, TX., Les was preceded in death by his first wife, Carol; parents, Omar and Eva; sister, Karoline Sullivan and her husbands, Eugene Goetsch and Larry Sullivan.

Salem - Lily Elizabeth Gause, 89, was born to John S. and Lydia E. (Anderson) Olson on a farm in rural McCook County, SD, on August 29, 1921. She passed away in Canton, SD on April 29, 2011., She attended rural schools in the area including Ramsey and Unityville, and graduated from Salem High School in 1939. She spent two years at Bethel Junior College in St. Paul, MN, before entering Mounds-Midway School of Nursing, also in St. Paul, where she graduated in 1945. She was in the Cadet Nursing Corps during the last six months of her training. She was employed as an RN at Mounds Park and Midway hospitals until she and Delbert Gause were married on April 26, 1947 in Ramsey Baptist Church. They lived on a farm in the Junius area before moving to the farm in Brookfield Township (Montrose, SD) where they lived until Del died in 1997. (This farm was homesteaded by Andrew Magnus Anderson, Lily's grandfather.), She moved to Sioux Falls to reside in Trail Ridge Retirement Community until declining health necessitated more care provided by her daughter and son-in-law, Wanda and Jack Bailey in Roseau, MN. Later she became a resident at Roseau Manor along with her daughter, Dianne. Most recently she has been a resident in Good Samaritan Society, Canton, SD, where she and her daughter Dianne were room-mates., Lily was a devoted Christian, having given her life to Christ at a young age. She was a faithful, active member at Ramsey Baptist Church and later Faith Baptist Fellowship in Sioux Falls. She was a Bible teacher and mentor to many., Lily is survived by her three children: Gerald (Sylvia) Gause, Dianne Gause, and Wanda (Jack) Bailey; three grandchildren, Rachel, Michelle, and Matthew Bailey; brother, A. Wallace (Mary) Olson; sister-in-law, Millie Pearson; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. She then attended St. John's-McNamara School of Nursing in Rapid City, S.D. She married Fred H. Mutter Sr. on Feb. 14, 1957, in Rapid City. Fred passed away May 8, 2001. Marilyn was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Fulton; a member of the American Legion Auxiliary in Granbury, Texas; and a member of the Women of the Moose in Rapid City. Survivors include a daughter, Elizabeth Buck, Moorcroft, Wyo.; three sons, Fred H. (Sherry) Mutter Jr., Colorado Springs, Colo., Lawrence R. (Judy) Mutter, Naples, Fla., and Thomas R. Mutter, Salt Lake City; eight grandchildren; a great-grandchild; two sisters, Jackie (Lyle) Carson, Hay Springs, Neb., and Karen Hegre, Rapid City; a brother, Richard Reed, Alma, Ark.; and her loving companion, Kenny Bielema, Fulton. RAPID CITY - Marvel A. Myers, 90, Rapid City, died Thursday, April 28, 2011, at Rapid City Regional Hospital Auxiliary Hospice House. Marvel was born April 3, 1921, in Buffalo Lake, Minn., the daughter of George and Anna Sausele. She grew up in Renville, Minn., graduating from high school there in 1939. She attended Business College in Minneapolis and worked as a bank employee in Willmar and Fairbault, Minn., until her marriage to Dean R. Myers on April 21, 1945, in Jackson, Minn. They have two children, Ronald and Marilyn. They resided in Dixon and Gregory, S.D., until 1959 when they moved to Rapid City. In 1977, a business transfer took them to Fergus Falls, Minn., where they lived until 1986. Then, in retirement, they moved to Santa Fe, N.M. In 1993, they returned to Rapid City to reside until the present time. After retiring, some winter months were spent each year in Mesa, Ariz. Marvel was baptized, confirmed and a lifetime member of the Lutheran Church. In addition to her homemaking responsibilities, she assisted her husband with his Aid Association for Lutherans duties. She is survived by her husband, Dean, Rapid City; a son, Ronald Myers, Santa Fe, N.M.; a daughter, Marilyn Bendt, Rapid City; four grandchildren: Holly Myers; Seattle, Elizabeth (David) Wofford, Schuarita, Ariz., Andrew Bendt, Fort Collins, Colo., and Alexander Bendt, Rapid City; one sister, Muriel Luxem, Rapid City; one great-granddaughter, Jillian Wofford; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, George and Anna Sausele; a brother, Frederick; a sister, Alice; and a son-in-law, Dennis Bendt. They were married on the beaches of Maui, Hawaii, and spent 28 wonderful years together, living for 19 years in Brandon before settling near Ozark, MO., Susan worked in the electronics industry at several local businesses. She was a long-time employee of Electronic Systems, Inc., in Sioux Falls; she also worked at Litton Industries and Raven Industries., Susan was a kind, sweet soul. She had a great love for pets, and was active with the rescue and adoption of animals in need. Susan also had a passion for movies and books., She is survived by her husband Marty; son Jason Reigstad and wife Heather (Sioux Falls, SD); sister Mary Gomarko and husband Darrell (Brandon, SD); sister Marsha Stapleton (Springfield, MO); brother Brian Lankey and wife Sarah (Montgomery, AL)., She was preceded in death by her parents, Raymond and Florence Lankey (Willmar, MN), and brother Alan Lankey (Reno, NV)., Susan was a former member of Brandon Lutheran Church.
