Darrel K. Oakley

RAPID CITY - Darrel K. Oakley, 77, Rapid City, died Tuesday, May 10, 2011, at Fort Meade Veterans Hospital in Sturgis. Darrel Kenneth Oakley was born on May 22, 1933, to Kenneth Ira and Zelda Fern (Littlefield) Oakley of Benkelman, Neb. The Dust Bowl day was so dark with blowing dirt that the city of Benkelman turned on the street lights. The doctor said aloud at his birth that Darrel was a "fat little rascal." Darrel attended elementary school in Benkelman and graduated from Dundy County High School in 1953. Darrell served in the U.S. Army Infantry during the Korean conflict. On June 3, 1956, Darrel married Carol Joanne Wisdom of Wray, Colo., at United Methodist Church in Wray. They lived in Benkelman for 13 years before moving two miles south of Keystone to the Buell Ranch. Three children were born during the time in Benkelman, Cynthia Ann, Charyl Jo, and Kenneth Darrel. Darrel and Carol accepted Jesus Christ as their savior and Lord in 1966 and were members of Trinity Baptist Church. For several years, while in Benkelman, Darrel drove 18 wheelers; he hauled cattle, hogs, sheep, REA poles, and fence posts. He hauled truckloads of watermelon from the southern end of Texas following the growing season north and delivered melons to local grocery stores within 120 miles of Benkelman. Stauter Sawmill in 1969 offered Darrel a job of hauling sawmill by-products from Hill City to Rapid City to be reloaded onto boxcars and shipped to paper mills on the Chicago and Northwestern Railway. Several markets were developed using and delivering sawmill by-products by Oakley Enterprises to turkey farms, dairy farms, and the Denver Stock Show. Wood shavings were baled in the Sioux City, Iowa, Stockyards. This was a busy 17-18 years. Darrel designed and built the trailers for that use. Oakley Enterprises joined with 13 other trucking companies presenting videos for the state of South Dakota to allow two 45' semi-trailers to travel Interstate 90. Oakley Enterprises also volunteered heavy equipment and helpers to assist in clearing debris after the flood of June 9, 1972. God allowed Darrel to be a part of building Calvary Baptist Church by transporting supplies. He served as a deacon at Calvary from 1970 until his death. Darrel loved people and shared Christ with many. God blessed Darrel and Carol to travel to many countries and to live in Jinja, Uganda, in East Africa for six months in 1993 assisting missionaries there. Darrel was preceded in death by his grandparents; parents; parents-in-law, William Lawrence Wisdom and Opal 'Earl' Wisdom Newbanks; stepfather-in-love, Spencer Newbanks; a sister, Ila Jane (Oakley) Caster and her husband, E. H. Caster; brothers-in-love, Lawrence Dale Wisdom, Richard Earl Wisdom, George Morris; and sister-in-love, Lois (Pope) Wisdom. Darrel is survived by his wife of 54 years, Carol (Wisdom) Oakley; his children, Cynthia Ann (Per) Sletten, Østerås, Norway; Charyl (Dennis) Scroggins, Indonesia; and Kenneth Darrel (Kristen, née Kuhn) Oakley, Henderson, Nev.; grandchildren, Carissa Joy Scroggins, Rapid City, Jonathan Daniel Scroggins, Mt. Rushmore, and Anndrea Cuinn Scroggins and Taniall Alise Scroggins, both of Indonesia; sisters, Della Louise (Oakley) Morris, Arvada, Colo., and Lelia Murrel (Oakley) Fortkamp and husband Floyd Fortkamp, Santa Rosa, Calif.; sister-in-love, Eunice (Ming) Wisdom, Wray, Colo.; and brother-in-love, Donald Roger Wisdom, Greeley, Colo; international students, Lola Tapia Celly, Margarita Molineros and Pablo Ivan Bravo, all of Ecuador, and from Bolivia, Guillermo San Juan, Lakewood, Colo.; and several nieces, nephews, cousins and step Newbanks' families. Visitation will be from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, May 15, at Osheim & Schmidt Funeral Home. With family being present to greet one and all, a celebration of life will be at 11 a.m. Monday, May 16, at Calvary Baptist Church, with the Rev. Gordon "Skip" Dean officiating. Glen D. Simonson

RICHLAND, Wash. - Glen D. Simonson was born Oct. 31, 1935, the oldest of five children to Norval and Veronica Simonson. He passed away Sunday, May 8, 2011, in Richland. Glen lived in West Richland for the past three years with Mel and April Roth enjoying the birds and wildlife watching from the back patio. He thrust upon anyone around him his love for car races and his constant addiction to the TV whenever there was a race on. If it had to do with cars - it was on the tube and you had to watch it with him! Glen worked for the Auto Salvage industry for 48 years in Rapid City, S.D. He retired in 2006. He may not remember your name but he always remembered what kind of car you drove - and possibly any car you had previous to that! Glen is survived by seven children, Glenda in Kennewick, Sadonna (Leon) Cordell in Custer, S.D., April (Mel) Roth in West Richland, Rory (Candace) in Rapid City, Brian in Finley, Darcey (Steve) Rupe in Black Hawk, S.D., and Scott (Barb) in Mandan, N.D.; 15 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; his mother, Veronica Simonson in Bozeman, Mont.; two brothers, Gary (Sharon) and Ardell; a sister, Diane Leum (Wes) and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his dad, Norval; and his youngest brother, Nubby. No services are planned at this time. Glen's wishes were to have his ashes strewn in his favorite hunting spot in South Dakota - and of course that is hallowed ground known only to the few privileged to hunt with Glen…… I can still hear him say, "Love you too sweetheart," after visiting him for the last time in the hospital. Rest in Peace Dad!

He returned to the family home in Newcastle in 1985 when his mother was ill, where he worked first as a sales rep for the radio station, and then for the County Assessor's Office before retiring in 2000. Throughout his life, Jim had great passion for classic cars, jazz music and his favorite hard-luck sports franchises, the Denver Broncos and the Chicago Cubs. RAPID CITY - Maxine F. Patterson, 83, Rapid City, died Friday, May 13, 2011, at Rapid City Regional Hospital. She was born on March 25, 1928, in Huron, to Clarence and Anna (Knowles) DeBauche and grew up on a farm outside of Huron. Maxine was united in marriage to Gene Patterson on Aug. 15, 1947, in Philip. After their wedding the couple began their family while living in Kadoka. Gene and Maxine operated several business ventures, including The Badlands Motel and a Mobil Service Station in Kadoka. After fire damaged their home in 1967, the entire family, including eight children, moved to Rapid City where they continued in numerous businesses (Enco Station, Patterson Auto Supply, Mac's Shoe Store, Patterson Equipment Co). Maxine operated Mac's Shoe Store, which was located next door to Gene's Patterson Auto Supply. The flood of 1972 destroyed both businesses. Patterson Auto Supply was reopened on Sturgis Road and later relocated to east Rapid City. After yet another fire, Patterson Farm Equipment in Piedmont was started. Gene appreciated Maxine's accounting and office expertise for all of these family business ventures. As the last of her children completed high school, Maxine worked for the city as a parking official and eventually as an animal control officer. While on a call, Maxine was involved in a dreadful auto accident. She spent many weeks in the hospital and many months recovering. For the past decade, Maxine enjoyed raising her two dogs, Spot and Heidi. She truly loved animals and was involved with animal protection and rescue organizations. Maxine will always be remembered for her great love of family. Her home was the gathering place for family and friends for chats, hugs, laughs, coffee and treats.
